Favorite Pastimes: Question Words
To talk about favorite pastimes and get information, we use question words (also called "Wh- words"). These words help us ask specific questions to learn more.
Here are the most common question words and how we use them:
- What: Used to ask about things or actions.
- What do you like to do in your free time?
- What is your favorite hobby?
- Where: Used to ask about places.
- Where do you usually go on weekends?
- Where do you play soccer?
- When: Used to ask about time.
- When do you practice your favorite pastime?
- When do you usually meet your friends?
- Who: Used to ask about people.
- Who do you spend your free time with?
- Who is your favorite singer?
- Why: Used to ask for a reason.
- Why do you enjoy reading so much?
- Why do you think that hobby is important for you?
- How: Used to ask about the manner or way something is done.
- How do you relax after a long day?
- How often do you engage in your favorite pastime?
By using these question words, you can have a conversation about people's hobbies and leisure activities.
Things You Enjoy Doing: Affirmative and Negative Sentences
When talking about what you enjoy or don't enjoy doing, you'll use affirmative and negative sentences.
Affirmative Sentences
These sentences state what you do like or enjoy. The basic structure is: Subject + Verb + Object/Complement.
- I enjoy reading books.
- She loves playing the guitar.
- We like going to the movies.
- They are interested in learning new languages.
- He spends his free time hiking.
You can also use expressions like "I'm good at," "I'm passionate about," or "I'm keen on."
Negative Sentences
These sentences state what you don't like or enjoy. To make a sentence negative, you usually add "do not" (don't) or "does not" (doesn't) before the main verb, or "not" after "to be" verbs.
- I do not (don't) enjoy waking up early.
- She does not (doesn't) like watching horror movies.
- We are not (aren't) interested in playing video games.
- They do not (don't) spend their free time shopping.
- He is not (isn't) keen on running long distances.
Life Experiences: Past, Present, and Future Tense
To talk about your life experiences, you'll use different verb tenses to indicate when an event happened, is happening, or will happen.
Past Tense
Used to describe actions or states that happened and finished at a specific time in the past. Common past tenses include the Simple Past and the Present Perfect.
- Simple Past: For completed actions at a definite time.
- I traveled to Mexico last year. (Completed action, definite time)
- She learned to play the piano when she was ten. (Completed action in the past)
- Present Perfect: For actions that started in the past and continue to the present, or actions that happened at an unspecified time in the past
but are relevant now. - I have visited three different continents. (Life experience, time unspecified)
- She has lived in this city for five years. (Started in the past, continues now)
Present Tense
Used to describe actions or states that are happening now, habitual actions, facts, or future events that are part of a schedule.
- Simple Present: For habits, routines, and general truths.
- I work as a teacher. (Current profession)
- She studies English every day. (Habitual action)
- Present Continuous: For actions happening at the moment of speaking.
- I am learning about different cultures. (Action happening now)
- They are living in an apartment downtown. (Temporary situation)
Future Tense
Used to describe actions or states that will happen in the future. Common ways to express the future include "will," "be going to," and the Present Continuous for planned events.
- Will: For predictions, spontaneous decisions, and promises.
- I will travel around the world someday. (Future prediction)
- I think she will achieve her goals. (Prediction)
- Be going to: For plans, intentions, and predictions based on present evidence.
- I am going to start a new project next month. (Future plan)
- They are going to move to a bigger house. (Intention)
- Present Continuous (for future): For definite plans or arrangements in the near future.
- We are meeting friends for dinner tomorrow. (Definite plan)
- He is starting a new job on Monday. (Arrangement)

Instrucciones:
